Years of dust and smoke film can make a good monitor look dim and washed out. A careful cleaning often makes a big difference.
First: read Before you open a machine and CRT monitor safety. Unplug the cabinet.
Steps
- Unplug the cabinet.
- Remove the marquee or control panel as needed to free the front glass. How this works varies by cabinet: some glass slides up and out, some is held by brackets.
- Lift the glass out carefully by its edges. Wear gloves; edges can be sharp. Lay it flat on a towel.
- Clean both sides of the glass. Spray cleaner onto the cloth, not directly on the glass.
- The bezel (the frame around the screen) is often cardboard or printed plastic. Dust it gently with a dry cloth. Don't wet cardboard bezels.
- Clean the screen (the face of the picture tube) with a cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner. Stay on the front face only. Don't reach behind the monitor or near the anode cap.
- Make sure everything is completely dry, then reinstall the bezel and glass.
Tips
- Haze that won't come off may be on the inside of the glass or on the tube face. Clean both before deciding the monitor is weak.
- Never spray liquid inside the cabinet.
